McConnell Claims He Didn't Attack Garland
“We didn’t attack Merrick Garland’s background and try to destroy him, we didn’t go on a search and destroy mission…”
Mitch McConnell 10.7.18, Sunday morning talk show
...then, McConnell went on to explain how they were just following the “rule” that says that if the senate is of the opposite party of the president, you don’t select a new supreme court justice in the final year before an election.
Riiiight.
We cannot let McConnell get away with this answer. The issue with the Garland nomination wasn’t that the republicans “attacked” Garland.
There was an attack, though, but it was aimed solely at President Obama.
The Republicans attacked the respect due the office of the presidency (while they weren't occupying it, of course).
The Republicans attacked the black man in that office who didn’t DESERVE to seat another supreme court justice.
The Republicans attacked President Obama’s legacy.
It was racist. It was deplorable. It was petty.
I will never respond to the argument that the Democrats were somehow “out of bounds” in their push back against Kavanaugh without the full acknowledgement of the Republican’s shameful refusal to respect President Obama’s right to seat another justice as the genesis of where we are today. They set the bar this low. These are the ground rules under which we now play.
The Republicans showed us exactly how far they are willing to go to gain power. The rules do not apply to them. Their ends always justify their means. Trump is a prime example of that thinking. We know they aren’t going to change their tactics anytime soon.
But, we CAN each do our part in keeping alive the memory of the travesty that was perpetrated on Merrick Garland and, more importantly, President Obama. Keep talking about it, reminding people of it. Don't let conversations about "civility" continue without mentioning Merrick Garland's name. Every time someone defends Kavanaugh, add Garland's name to the conversation.
Never forget. Continue to fight.
